The previous vice president is to become the new top constitutional protection officer in Hesse: the cabinet still has to approve the appointment of Bernd Neumann.
Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Bernd Neumann is to become the new president of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution (LfV) in Hesse. Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) proposed the previous LfV Vice President to the cabinet, the Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday in Wiesbaden on request. The Hessischer Rundfunk had previously reported on the personnel. Neumann would succeed Robert Schäfer, who took up the post of chief of police in Hesse last November.
"Bernd Neumann is an exemplary leader," emphasized Interior Minister Beuth. "He brings employees together, creates team spirit and common goals." As Vice President, he has already achieved a lot in the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in recent years. "It stands for a positive continuity in the change of the authority and its intelligence work."
After Schäfer moved to the state police headquarters, the position as the top Hessian intelligence officer was vacant. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the Hessian state government will deal with the personnel next Monday.
Bernd Neumann, who was born in Mainz and is a married father of two children, has held a managerial position at the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution since 2015. The 56-year-old has been Vice President of the authority since 2018. According to the Ministry of the Interior, he was also closely involved in setting up the Hessian Center for Defense against Extremism and Terrorism.
