Hesse: Tourism in Hesse is picking up: Numbers before Corona but higher

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Tourism in Hesse picked up in 2022 and significantly exceeded the level of the first Corona years. However, it is not yet at the level it was before the pandemic, the State Statistical Office said on Wednesday in Wiesbaden. Last year, 88 percent more guests and 59 percent more overnight stays were reported by the hostels than in 2021. However, these are still 20 percent fewer guests and 16 percent fewer overnight stays than in 2019.

According to the statisticians, 2022 was still under the influence of the pandemic. However, numerous travel restrictions have been lifted or relaxed.

The average occupancy of the beds has risen from 25 to 34 percent compared to the previous year. Another development indicates that more short stays are being booked again, the state office said. The average length of stay has decreased from 2.8 to 2.3 days.

Last year, 12.7 million guests came to the state, an increase of 5.9 million. The number of overnight stays has risen from almost eleven million to almost 30 million. Both values have increased in all independent cities and districts, with 80 percent of the guests coming from Germany and 20 percent from abroad.

According to the state office, the trend continued in January 2023 according to preliminary results. Compared to the same month last year, the number of guests rose by 113 and overnight stays by 67 percent.
