Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: First Commander of the Navy

Parow (dpa / mv) - The German Navy has its first female commander. The 36-year-old corvette captain Victoria Kietzmann was appointed on Friday, as announced by the naval engineering school in Parow near Stralsund. It was said that she had taken command of teaching group C at the Naval Engineering School (MTS) in Parow.

The commander of the school, Sven Janssen, called the change not an everyday one. "I think it's brilliant that we have the Navy's first female commander assigned to MTS," he said. Training group C is a basic training unit and lays the soldierly foundation for the recruits. "The first impression that a woman as a battalion commander can be something completely normal in the armed forces will accompany the soldiers in the future."
