Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: New monument commemorates Troy excavator Schliemann: Conference

Ankershagen/Rostock (dpa/mv) - On the grounds of the Heinrich Schliemann Museum in Ankershagen (Mecklenburg Lake District), a new bronze bust will commemorate Germany's most well-known archaeologist. As a spokeswoman for the museum said on Wednesday, the new memorial stands for the awakening of that time and will stand next to the vicarage where Schliemann (1822-1890) grew up as a child. It will be ceremoniously unveiled this Saturday. The occasion is the anniversary year 2022, in which Schliemann's 200th birthday is commemorated. The bust was designed by the sculptor Walter Preik (1932-2018). His sons have since finished it.

The unveiling is also part of the program of an international conference taking place from October 20th to 23rd in Rostock, Ankershagen and Berlin. Experts from the Netherlands and Greece, among others, are expected to speak on the significance of Schliemann's work and his archeology contemporaries from today's perspective.

Schliemann was born on January 6, 1822 in Neubukow near Rostock, grew up in Ankershagen as a child of a pastor's family and went to school in Neustrelitz, among other places. He became a very successful businessman, lived among other things in Russia and later in Greece and spoke many languages. Under the motto "Schliemann's Worlds", a show in Berlin also reminds us of his complex work. The bust was financed in part by the Jost Reinhold Foundation.
