Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 250-kilo bomb in Rechlin is to be defused in November

Rechlin (dpa/mv) - The five hundredweight bomb discovered in Rechlin (Mecklenburg Lake District) is to be defused and disposed of in early November. The regulatory authorities have determined this in coordination with the municipality, the police and the ammunition workers, as a spokesman for the responsible Röbel-Land office said on Friday. Since the dud of American design is on a closed property, there is no acute danger. The exploration work on the site would be continued in another construction site. The find was reported on Wednesday.

The reason for the long period of time is, on the one hand, the technical challenge, it said. One of the two detonators was bent and would probably have to be cut out at great expense. In addition, the tourism season is still ongoing and a complete holiday home village is in the restricted area.

The 250-kilo bomb came from an Allied bombing raid at the end of the war in 1945, when the German Air Force test site in Rechlin was attacked. A similar dud had already been discovered and defused in March. The municipality is currently having the ex-Bundeswehr property cleared so that investors can use it.
