Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: After devastation: cleaning up the cemetery has begun

Groß Varchow (dpa / mv) - After the enormous devastation in the cemetery in Groß Varchow (Mecklenburg Lake District), clean-up work has begun there. A third of the knocked over or damaged graves were mostly repaired by relatives, said Mayor Thomas Diener (CDU) on Monday. More than 60 graves were damaged in the cemetery on the night of October 20th. The police are investigating for disturbing the peace of the dead and have identified two 14-year-old girls as suspects.

"We are still shocked by this act," said Diener. On Sunday evening, around 150 residents and those affected met for a candle prayer at the cemetery. "One family even came with a mini excavator on Sunday to put the gravestone back up," said Diener. In some cases, the damage will be examined more closely. Since there are not contact persons for all graves, a part will probably be repaired by the municipality and the fire brigade. "But here "good" comes before "fast"," said Diener, referring to the stability of older tombstones.

According to the police, the girls were identified as suspects through traces and clues. They belonged to a group from another state that was in the area. The motive is still unclear. "We doubt that the girls were alone," said the mayor. The stones are too heavy and the damage too high. The police estimated the property damage at more than 50,000 euros.
