Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: After the prison sentence: police officer appeals

Neubrandenburg/Rostock (dpa/mv) - A police officer from Malchin (Mecklenburg Lake District), who was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for dangerous bodily harm, goes to the next instance. As a spokesman for the Neubrandenburg district court said on Tuesday, the convict has appealed against the judgment of the Appeals Chamber of January 20th. The higher regional court in Rostock must therefore decide on the case in the third instance. The police officer's assistant, who had received a suspended sentence, also appealed.

According to the court, the police officer and his son-in-law severely abused a neighbor in Malchin in 2018 and then left him helpless in his apartment. The 57 and 46-year-old men were first acquitted by the district court, but the public prosecutor appealed. The regional court sentenced the policeman to two and a half years in prison, which would mean losing his status as a civil servant. The 46-year-old was sentenced to 18 months in prison, which was suspended. Both should pay 25,000 euros in damages.

The defense attorneys had asked for an acquittal. Shortly before the end of the trial, the police officer's wife stated that she was said to have been sexually harassed by her neighbors at the time. That's why the policeman threw him out. According to the public prosecutor and the district court, this was a protective claim.
