Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Even more than 30 years after the fall of the Wall, the state commissioner for dealing with the SED dictatorship remains an important contact point for people who were persecuted in the GDR and suffered injustice. The need for advice is still high. Many of those affected were still suffering from the consequences and effects of the communist and SED dictatorship, said Anne Drescher, head of the authority, on Tuesday in Schwerin at the presentation of her activity report for 2022. According to this, 642 citizens in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania contacted the authority of the state representative. It was mostly about help with the recognition of SED injustice and the associated claims for benefits.
According to Drescher, in addition to the legal advisory mandate, her authority will also devote herself to coming to terms with the SED dictatorship in the state in 2023 with events, publications and research projects. The 70th anniversary of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 plays a special role.
