Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Corona and increased prices - holidaymakers book at short notice

More holidaymakers in the North East are refraining from long-term bookings amid uncertain times. The booking situation for the turn of the year and autumn is mixed.

Binz/Zingst/Waren (dpa/mv) - Tourists often book their holidays in the northeast more spontaneously than in the past. This is the result of a survey by the German Press Agency of tourism associations and room brokers in the country. The Rügen Tourism Association, for example, cites uncertainties due to rising prices and the corona pandemic as reasons. The tourism association Mecklenburgische Seenplatte also reports an increase in spontaneous bookings.

Anne Crämer, Managing Director of Kur- und Tourismus GmbH in Zingst auf dem Darß, writes, "Some guests are in the room agency business and now want their holiday home". The landlords have already prepared for this. "We have to pick up our guests where they are." For the turn of the year one is not yet fully booked, but hope for further inquiries.

In neighboring Prerow, according to the local room exchange, it is not expected that the accommodation will be fully booked at the turn of the year as usual. A good fifth had not been booked until recently. You can tell people are worried. "Many will possibly forego avoidable expenses for the time being."

For Rügen, the local tourism association did not have any precise information until recently. There have been isolated reports of companies considering closing down in winter due to a lack of profitability. At the lake district, it is said that the pre-booking figures for New Year's Eve are good. Companies planned company holidays in winter as in previous years.

With a view to the autumn holidays, there was no uniform picture. In the lake district there is talk of a decline of between 30 and 50 percent compared to the previous year, but roughly the level before the corona pandemic. Rügen, on the other hand, says that the booking situation has not normalized since the pandemic and is well below the pre-crisis level.

In Prerow, according to their own statements, they were fully booked during the autumn holidays in the two pandemic years 2020 and 2021 and in 2022 they are slightly above the pre-corona level. In Zingst there was a minimal increase in bookings in October compared to the previous year.
