Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Country commemorates the beginning of the war in Ukraine

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - One year after the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania commemorates the thousands of war victims with a service and a ceremonial wreath-laying ceremony in Schwerin. According to the organizers, the commemoration event on Friday (2.30 p.m.) is intended to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people and underpin calls for an end to Russian aggression. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has announced her participation on behalf of the state government. Other events are planned in Rostock and Stralsund, among others.

On February 24, 2022, Russian troops invaded Ukraine and thus began the illegal war against the neighboring country, which is still ongoing today and fuels fears of a further escalation. The city of Schwerin joined an appeal by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on behalf of the global organization Mayors for Peace to end the painful war in Ukraine. On the anniversary of the beginning of the war, the alliance's flag with a white dove as a symbol of peace will again be hoisted in front of Schwerin's town hall, announced Mayor Rico Badenschier (SPD).
