Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Covid-19 more common cause of death than heart attack

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In 2021, 1,418 people died of Covid-19 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, six and a half times as many as in the first year of the corona pandemic, 2020. As can be seen from the cause of death statistics published in Schwerin on Tuesday Corona diseases are the cause of death in 5.9 percent of all 24,152 deaths in the country. The proportion was thus higher than that of high blood pressure (5.8), acute myocardial infarction (5.8) or stroke (5.4). 259 people died from the flu last year. This corresponded to a share of 1.1 percent.

As a spokesman for the Statistical Office in Schwerin said, statistically only those cases were considered to be caused by corona in which the doctor confirmed the infection as the cause. There could also be other pre-existing conditions. The spokesman placed the sharp increase in deaths from Covid-19 in a direct connection with the drastic increase in the number of infections. While in autumn 2020 the seven-day incidence in the northeast was around 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, the value reached around 400 a year later.

According to data from the Statistical Office, the number of deaths in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2021 was 24,152, 2,298 or 10.5 percent more than in the previous year. Cardiovascular diseases remained the main cause of death with a total share of 35.9 percent. This was followed by cancer, which was the cause of 22.4 percent of all deaths.

In the case of 919 and thus 3.8 percent of all deaths, the statistics show non-natural causes of death such as injuries or poisoning. 385 people died from a fall and 76 from traffic accidents. 214 people took their own lives, three quarters of these cases were men. Three people died after physical attacks.
