Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Demand for a new corona vaccine is slowly increasing

The vaccines adapted to the current corona variants have been available in the vaccination centers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for two weeks. A second booster is recommended, especially for risk groups.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Vaccination with the vaccine adapted to the corona variants Omikron BA4 and BA5 has increased in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the last week. "It is very positive that the new, adaptive Biontech vaccine adapted to BA.4/5 has been in use across the board in MV for 14 days and is increasingly in demand," said Health Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) in Schwerin.

With 659 vaccinations between September 26 and October 2, the vaccine accounted for 10 percent of all corona vaccinations in the country, compared to only 56 in the start week. According to Drese, however, comparatively little is currently being vaccinated. With 6591 and 5500 vaccinations in the last two weeks, the vaccination campaign is well below the level of previous years.

The new vaccines, manufactured by the German pharmaceutical company Biontech, are only intended for booster vaccinations. For basic immunization, the original vaccines from Biontech and the American company Moderna continue to be offered. Drese advises people over the age of 60 and those with previous illnesses to take a second booster vaccination: "This will maintain personal immune protection".

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 59.9 percent of the population in the north-east have received at least one and 9.1 percent two booster vaccinations.
