Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Fire brigade warns of ice surfaces: weeks of permafrost necessary

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - According to the fire brigade, one week of permafrost is not enough to allow a stable layer of ice to grow on the water. The professional fire brigade in Schwerin urgently warned on Friday against walking over the ice surfaces. They should only be entered when there has been permafrost for weeks and the ice is at least 15 to 20 centimeters thick. Permafrost is forecast for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania until Sunday. From Monday there should be plus grades.

"Please also explain to your children that stepping on the ice can be life-threatening," Stephan Jakobi, head of the Schwerin professional fire brigade, appealed to parents. Unfortunately, one can never say exactly when the ice will wear. Many factors played a role here, such as currents, inflows and outflows and solar radiation. Particular caution is required when the area is covered with snow or the ice is beginning to thaw.
