Groß Strömkendorf (dpa/mv) - The day-long fire brigade operation at the burnt down refugee accommodation in Groß Strömkendorf near Wismar has ended. As a spokesman for the Blowatz fire brigade, to which Groß Strömkendorf belongs, announced on Monday, the fire watch at the ruins was finally stopped on Sunday evening. The fire site was so cold that the comrades were able to move away and hand over the remains of the thatched former hotel to the police. Meanwhile, the search for the exact cause of the fire continues. The police are investigating on suspicion of arson.
In connection with a swastika daubing on an operator sign set up nearby, state security is investigating a political background in advance. However, there has also been an unsolved series of fires in the region for weeks, to which straw heaps, forest areas and, on October 10, a thatched house in Blowatz fell victim.
According to the accommodation manager, the fire broke out on Wednesday evening on the outside of the former hotel, which housed 14 refugees from Ukraine and 3 caregivers. Everyone was able to save themselves. Despite attempts to extinguish it, flames set the thatched roof on fire, which is why most of the building burned down. The damage is estimated at millions.
