Schwerin (dpa/mv) - In the state parliament, the Greens warned of the destruction of sensitive ecosystems if the port of Rostock were to be expanded, among other things for the construction of an LNG terminal in 2025. A valuable coastal flooding bog would have to be eliminated, as Green MP Hannes Damm said in parliament on Thursday.
Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) defended the project, although the state government has taken up the cause of moor protection with a view to climate change. The construction of a floating LNG terminal planned in Rostock in 2025 is a precautionary measure for Germany's security of supply, he said. Germany will still need liquid gas after the winter of 2022. Exactly how much is still unclear, he said. "None of us can make a definitive assessment of how the supply situation will develop over the next few years," said the minister.
One third of the total CO2 emissions in MV are attributed to drained moors. Meyer assured that the environmental assessments for the expansion of the Rostock port would be carried out in accordance with German law.
