Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Land continues to recruit young teachers: 84 new trainee teachers

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - For the new school year, 84 prospective teachers will start teaching in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As announced by the Ministry of Education, Minister Simone Oldenburg (left) will welcome the trainees on Thursday, a good two weeks before classes begin, at a central ceremony in Schwerin. For years, the state has been trying to recruit as many teaching students as possible after the first state examination for a position in the north-east, and now offers four appointments for this: in February, April, August and October.

"The training at our schools and life in our country are attractive. If the trainee teachers are convinced by the training and they would like to continue working at our schools, they can stay at the schools without having to go through a new application process thanks to the state's employment guarantee directly into the teaching profession," stressed Oldenburg. According to her, three out of four of the trainee teachers now admitted passed their first state examination at one of the two universities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

According to the ministry, the country has to hire around 700 teachers every year to replace colleagues who are retiring due to age or to cover additional needs. However, hiring young teachers after a successful traineeship is not sufficient for this. In 2020, for the first time, more than 500 trainee teachers in the north-east began their 18-month preparatory service, but not all stayed in the country afterwards. In the previous year, a third of the new teachers came into the state's school service as lateral entrants without any pedagogical training.
