Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: More money for sports projects from clubs and schools

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Sports clubs and schools will receive more money for joint projects in response to corona-related restrictions. "This year, due to the large number of applications, the Ministry of Social Affairs is increasing the funds by a further 60,000 euros from the federal program "Catching up after Corona". We are thus making an important contribution to promoting physical activity for children and young people, for example in the afternoon care in the state's schools". , said the Minister of Social Affairs, Stefanie Drese (SPD), who is responsible for sport, on Thursday in Schwerin.

According to their information, the state government is funding more than 600 cooperation projects this year. Normally, 255,600 euros per year are available for the implementation of the state program "Sport in Schools and Clubs", 140,600 euros come from the Ministry of Social Affairs, 115,000 euros from the Ministry of Education. With the one-off increase in funds, 315,600 euros are now available for this year.

"Our state program has proven itself for many years. The importance of the program has increased even further due to the lack of exercise among children and young people that arose during the pandemic," emphasized Drese. The good cooperation between sports clubs and schools is of great importance, especially with a view to the organization of the all-day school in the coming years.

The drastic reduction in the range of sports offered as a result of the corona pandemic had caused widespread criticism. So far, it is unclear what effects the targeted energy savings will have on the sports offered in schools and clubs. In many places, ailing sports halls also prevent physical education classes from being held as planned.
