Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: MV wants to become more attractive for campers

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as a tourist country wants to further increase its attractiveness for camping holidaymakers. For this purpose, the more than ten-year-old state regulation for camping and weekend sites is to be renewed and adapted to current developments. This was decided by the state parliament in Schwerin on Wednesday with the votes of the coalition factions of the SPD and the left as well as the CDU and FDP. The Greens refused to approve the application on the grounds that the goals were not sustainable, and the AfD also voted against it.

This should make it possible for permanent camping houses with up to 50 square meters of floor space, so-called tiny houses, to be erected on campsites. In addition, the permanent installation of mobile homes and caravans that are not roadworthy should be simplified. There should be uniform quality standards for supply and disposal for municipal mobile home parking spaces. In addition, modernization should be facilitated on specially protected forest campsites.

Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD), who is also responsible for tourism, emphasized the importance of camping tourism. "Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is primarily associated with nature-based tourism for many guests," he said. However, the quality requirements would increase and new trends, such as the increase in vacations in mobile homes, would increase the requirements. The corona pandemic has given camping tourism a significant boost.

According to Meyer, the State Statistical Office registered around 760,000 overnight stays at the state’s campsites in June 2022 alone, an increase of a good 8 percent compared to the same month last year. The industry expects around 5 million overnight stays for the current year. According to the minister, campsites in Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein are even more popular.
