Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Neuendorf promises Rostock women's international match

Rostock (dpa/mv) - DFB President Bernd Neuendorf has given FC Hansa Rostock the prospect of hosting an international match for the women's national team in the Ostseestadion. "Basically, I support that women's international matches take place regularly in the new federal states - and of course also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania," said the 61-year-old of the Ostsee-Zeitung (Monday). Neuendorf praised "a great football tradition" in the Hanseatic city. "Here we have the fans and a nice stadium. I think the conditions are right," he added.

The DFB has "several applications" and the decision will soon be made in the association's management bodies. "It will be difficult before the Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer. You will certainly be able to take a look at the cycle afterwards," said Neuendorf with regard to the planning.

The awarding of a men's senior international match, on the other hand, is linked to higher requirements, such as the infrastructure of the stadium or hotel capacities. "If there are appropriate applications, we will talk about it specifically," said the head of the association about the possibilities of a men's international match in East Germany.

Neuendorf met with club officials, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Sports Minister Stefanie Drese, representatives of the state football association and Hansa fans last Saturday.

The interview took place before the incidents of several alleged Hansa supporters who, around the game against Darmstadt 98 (0:1), had thrown stones at shuttle buses in which guest supporters were sitting. In addition, a fan train from Darmstadt was attacked several times by unknown perpetrators with stones on the return journey. The club had strongly condemned the incidents.

Furthermore, the game against Darmstadt 98 was interrupted for a few minutes in front of Neuendorf because of the burning of pyrotechnics in the Hansa fan block and the resulting heavy smoke development in the Ostseestadion.
