Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: No plans for English as a second official language in the north-east

English is the world language, but the forms will only be available in German in the authorities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for the foreseeable future. In some areas, however, there are considerations to make it easier for potential international specialists.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Despite the shortage of skilled workers, there are no considerations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to introduce English in the authorities as a second language alongside German. This was neither discussed in the past nor is it currently an issue, the State Chancellery in Schwerin said on request.

The federal FDP brought up the idea from their election program again in 2021. The Liberals want to make Germany more attractive to international companies and skilled workers.

According to the Economics Ministry in Schwerin, although not in dealings with the authorities, consideration is being given to promoting English as a second language in companies as part of the skilled labor strategy. The Ministry also refers to existing project funding, such as that of the advice center for foreign employees.

Also under discussion is the possibility of setting up companies in English in the future. In this way, both migrants and foreign students could be supported with corresponding ambitions.
