Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Northwest Mecklenburg advises on an additional refugee home

District Administrator Tino Schomann is again meeting with district representatives and mayors in Northwest Mecklenburg in search of new locations to accommodate refugees. This should relieve the planned accommodation in Upahl.

Grevesmühlen/Upahl (dpa/mv) - After the ongoing protests against the refugee accommodation in Upahl, the Northwest Mecklenburg district continues to look for alternatives. As the district announced, District Administrator Tino Schomann (CDU), the district committee and the eleven mayors of larger cities in the district are again invited to a meeting on Monday in Grevesmühlen. We are looking for new plots of land or buildings that can be used to accommodate refugees.

The protest by the citizens of Upahl, a town of 500, against the construction of container accommodation for 400 asylum seekers caused a nationwide sensation after riots broke out around the crucial district council meeting. According to the police, the last round of consultations at the beginning of February were accompanied by 550 demonstrators.

But there were demonstrations not only in Upahl. On Wednesday evening, District Administrator Schomann was also confronted with 250 demonstrators in front of the venue at a town hall meeting in Gadebusch. The district administrator explained the plans for the construction of accommodation for 100 to 150 people on a state property in the village to the 140 citizens at the event.

According to eyewitness accounts, the mood was excited both inside and outside. Representatives of the right-wing spectrum were also among those present. In the run-up, the demonstration was advertised on the Telegram messenger service and mobilized against the plans to accommodate refugees.

The background to the current efforts to build new accommodation is both the renewed increase in the number of asylum seekers and the fact that the only accommodation in the district with 400 places in Wismar is already full. Those responsible have already had to set up two gyms in the city as an interim solution. These are to be emptied again after the completion of the accommodation in Upahl, which is planned for March.
