Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: stranded barge recovered on Prerower beach

Prerow (dpa / mv) - The transport pontoon stranded a week ago in front of Prerow (Vorpommern-Rügen district) was successfully towed free on Saturday afternoon. A number of fortunate circumstances played into the hands of the rescue team, said Environment Minister Till Backhaus.

"With the northwest wind that started today, the water in the Prerow Bay has risen by a good 20 centimeters and gave the salvage team exactly the hand's breadth of water under the keel of the pontoon that was necessary to pull the workboat out of the area near the beach in front of Prerow in the third attempt deep water," said the SPD politician. In the end, therefore, only one tugboat was needed to make the salvage a success. "The wind and waves that stranded the pontoon helped to get them free again."

An island port is currently being built near Prerow, for which the Schute had transported building materials from Scandinavia to Norddarß. After the successful salvage maneuver, the barge will be examined by divers for damage in the underwater area. It is then transported back to Norway by a tugboat to bring more granite stones to the construction area for the construction of the breakwater.
