Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: virus on card reader: only cash payment in facilities

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Due to a security incident with a card reader, visitors to various state institutions such as museums and castles can initially only pay in cash. Because of the incident in the afternoon, the State Office for Finance (LAF) asked several institutions to stop using the devices, as the Ministry for Digitization announced on Thursday evening. About 100 card readers are affected in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. These are also used when police officers or bailiffs collect fees on the go.

One of these devices showed unusual behavior, which was initially reported as an operational malfunction, said Digitization Minister Christian Gauge (SPD). "As a result, the manufacturer confirmed that the system was infected with malware based on a security hole in Android OS." The LAF has filed a criminal complaint. "It seems unlikely that money or data have been lost." However, binding statements would only result from the investigations of the State Criminal Police Office and the examinations of the LAF.
