The British-American actress Angela Lansbury is dead. The star of the TV series "Murder is her hobby" died in Los Angeles at the age of 96, as the family said in a statement available to the German Press Agency. Her mother died "peacefully" in her sleep at home just five days before her 97th birthday, the actress' three children wrote in the statement.

Born on October 16, 1925 in London, she was fascinated by Hollywood at an early age and took singing and acting lessons as a teenager. Her family moved to the United States during World War II. The 20-year-old made her breakthrough with her first film "The House of Lady Alquist". Angela Lansbury was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of the scheming maid, followed by a second nomination for The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Shortly after the war she married the British Peter Shaw in her second marriage and had the perfect relationship with him for 54 years until his death in 2003. He was one of the top agents in Hollywood and managed her career. Dozens of Hollywood films followed, including the award-winning Fear Ambassador and Death on the Nile, as well as Broadway productions such as Mame, Sweeney Todd and Gypsy. She was an award-winning musical star with an honorary Oscar, three Oscar nominations, six Golden Globes, five Tony Awards.

But "Murder Is Her Hobby" brought her into the living rooms of the world as amateur detective Jessica Fletcher - it was one of the most popular and longest-running detective series of all time. Despite artificial knee and hip joints, Angela Lansbury was still on stage and in front of the camera at an advanced age and, at the age of 89, received an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress.
