The countdown to Eurovision 2023 begins. The city of Liverpool (United Kingdom) finalizes the preparations to welcome the 37 participants of the 67th edition of the festival, including Blanca Paloma, the Spanish representative who is presented with the songEaEa. Here are some details of the contest:
The 2023 edition of Eurovision will be atypical. For the first time in the history of the song festival, the winning country of the previous year will not organize the event. The reason for this change in trend is obvious, since the current winners are the Ukrainian Kalush Orchestra with the theme Stefania, whose country has been defending itself against the invasion of Russia for more than a year.
Faced with the possibility of a Ukrainian victory in Eurovision 2022, the United Kingdom and Spain rose as the main candidates to host the song festival, although it finally headed for the British Isles thanks to the second place won by Sam Ryder. The Spanish representative, Chanel Terrero, finished in third position, thus fading away Spain's options to host Eurovision 2023, probably in Benidorm. Although Glasgow was also positioned as the venue, it was finally decided on the city of The Beatles.
There are three May dates to mark on the calendar. As usual, Eurovision is divided into three main blocks: two semifinals and the grand final. These are the dates of the contest:
Spain, as a member of the Big Five, is classified directly to the grand final, along with Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. The direct passage of these countries responds to a recognition for being the ones that contribute the most financially to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
As of this edition, the public vote will be the only one that counts in the two semifinals. For the grand final, the votes of the professional juries of each country will have more weight than that of the public. Likewise, this year viewers from non-participating countries will also be able to vote online, grouping all of these together as if they were just another country. This novelty means that in the final the weight of the public vote is 50.6%.
After the celebration of the Benidorm Fest 2023, Blanca Paloma from Alicante won the right to be the representative of Spain in Eurovision.
The woman from Elche will take her flamenco tribute to her grandmother Carmen to Liverpool with the song Eaea after winning in Benidorm by 24 points ahead of Agoney, second in the great duel.
In addition to the 37 participants in the contest, the role of Eurovision 2023 will also fall on the presenters of the galas. The contest will be hosted by Julia Sanina, Ukrainian singer and leader of the group The Hardkiss; Hannah Waddingham, Emmy Award-winning British singer and actress; Alesha Dixon, pop star and presenter and the journalist Graham Norton, living legend of Eurovision and presenter of the 60th edition.
