North Rhine-Westphalia: 2700 euros fine for illegal car races in the university tunnel

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A 23-year-old has been fined 2,700 euros for taking part in two illegal car races in the Düsseldorf university tunnel. In addition, the Düsseldorf district court revoked his driver's license on Friday and imposed a ban of six months.

According to the court, the 23-year-old is one of the three drivers who, in April 2021, had a race in their high-powered cars in the Autobahn 46 tunnel and filmed it themselves.

They raced their cars through the tunnel twice faster than allowed. Witnesses had informed the police and the tunnel cameras provided the necessary photos as evidence.

As it turned out, the speeders had also filmed themselves. During house searches, the investigators came across extensive evidence and chat histories of the WhatsApp group "PS-Niederrhein". It contained numerous dates for races and films of them.

The proceedings against the other two suspected speeders are still pending. Their vehicles had even been confiscated. That was not possible with the vehicle in which the 23-year-old was traveling at the time. It belonged to his mother and had since been sold.

The 23-year-old had appealed against a penalty order. With success: The penalty order provided for a fine of 6,000 euros and a driver's license suspension of 18 months.

In connection with the investigation, a selfie video appeared that, according to the police, shows one of the other drivers at a record-breaking speed of 305 on Autobahn 3 near Leverkusen. It was filmed on a section where the speed limit is 120.
