North Rhine-Westphalia: balloon glow and races: Montgolfiade begins

Münster (dpa / lnw) - At the weekend, balloonists from all over Germany are expected again at the Montgolfiade in Münster. The visual highlight of the 51st edition is the balloon glow on Friday evening (9 p.m.), and four races are also planned. Around 40 balloonist teams are expected.

Athletes and onlookers have to hope for good weather. If there is too much wind or rain, neither launches nor balloon glow are possible, said Andreas Zumrode, board member of the Freiballonsport-Verein Münster und Münsterland, which organizes the Montgolfiade.

With balloon glow, the balloons stay on the ground and are illuminated from the inside. According to Zumrode, the four races will be held as "fox races". A balloon drives ahead and determines the destination for the competition with its landing site. For the others, it is important to control this as precisely as possible.
