Thuringia: Motor vehicle trade: market for used cars collapsed

Fewer new cars but also fewer used ones - the situation for car dealerships and workshops in Thuringia is getting worse.

Erfurt (dpa/th) - The people of Thuringia are not only buying fewer new cars, there is also a sharp decline in the change of ownership for used ones. The sales figures for used cars in July fell by almost a third (31.1 percent) to just under 10,200 compared to the same month last year, the state association of motor vehicle trades said on request in Erfurt. The situation is and will remain extremely tense, said association president Helmut Peter.

There is still a lack of supplies on the used car market because fewer new cars are being bought and therefore fewer older ones are being offered. After months of increasing, the prices for used vehicles are now stable.

According to the association, around 75,300 used cars have changed hands in Bavaria since the beginning of the year. In the first seven months of 2021 there were still around 93,000 - a decrease of 19 percent. Peter put the loss in sales for the industry at around 334 million euros compared to the same period last year.

Cars with internal combustion engines accounted for almost 93 percent of the July used car figures. There is an increase in sales, albeit at a low level, for electric cars and plug-in hybrids as well as for LPG-powered cars. Overall, the start of the second half of the 2022 financial year was disappointing for the motor vehicle trade with many small and medium-sized companies, said the association president.

New car registrations also declined in July, mainly due to manufacturers' supply and production bottlenecks. Overall, there were only 3,684 newly registered cars, a drop of around 13 percent compared to the same month last year, the state association recently announced. Only purely electric vehicles increased by 27 cars to 397.
