North Rhine-Westphalia: Climate activists block the road near the university in Cologne

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - Activists from the climate protection movement Last Generation blocked road traffic near Cologne University on Friday. Around 9:30 a.m., seven people appeared on the three-lane Universitätsstraße, a police spokesman said. "Four of the people were taped and released by our technical unit," he said. "We were there quickly and the cars could be diverted quickly."

Traffic was backed up for a short time. The operation lasted about two hours. Now it is being investigated for coercion in road traffic and suspicion of violating the right of assembly.

"The feeling when I'm sitting there and the cars are so close is a threatening feeling," said activist Caroline Schmidt, who took part in the campaign. "But I find the climate situation that we are speeding towards much more threatening and dangerous."
