Herford (dpa / lnw) - Under the influence of alcohol and drugs, a 33-year-old man stole an articulated bus in Herford and caused numerous accidents on the nightly jaunt. Witnesses drew the police's attention to the "wild ride" late on Wednesday evening, according to a statement on Thursday. No one was injured, and according to initial estimates, the property damage caused was 100,000 euros.

According to previous investigations, the 33-year-old from Herford stole the vehicle from a bus parking lot at around 11:25 p.m. and drove – without a driver’s license, drunk and under the influence of drugs – initially out of town. He damaged several traffic signs, a garbage can, a fence and numerous parked cars in Herford and the surrounding area. He rammed a parked small car so hard that it was thrown between a tree and a wall and completely destroyed. After being chased by a police patrol, the 33-year-old broke through the fence of a company premises with the bus, rammed another vehicle and got stuck at the scene of the accident.

Blood samples were taken from the Herforder. The badly damaged bus was towed away and secured. The man now has to answer for numerous offenses such as theft, hit-and-run, driving without a license and under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
