Würselen (dpa / lnw) - While fleeing a police check, a drunk driver crashed into the guardrail on the Autobahn 544 near Würselen. He then left his car and his two passengers and fled on foot, police said on Sunday. According to initial findings, the 23-year-old accelerated in front of the checkpoint on the autobahn early on Saturday morning and fled in the direction of Aachen. When he wanted to exit the A544 near Würselen, he lost control and collided with the crash barrier.
After initially running away, the 23-year-old returned to the scene of the accident shortly afterwards. The driver had to surrender his driver's license. A test showed him an alcohol level of 1.4 per mille.
