North Rhine-Westphalia: Gas prices: NRW government calls for quick action

Düsseldorf/Berlin (dpa/lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian state government has welcomed the recommendations of the gas price commission and called on the federal government to act quickly. "It's good that the Commission has now formulated concrete proposals. Now it's the turn of the federal government, it has to answer the outstanding questions immediately," said a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) of the "Rheinische Post".

The committee set up by the federal government proposed on Monday that gas and district heating customers should initially be relieved with a one-off payment in December. This should serve as a bridge until the start of the regular gas price brake in March, which should apply until at least April 2024.

It remains central that the measures are targeted and do not follow the “watering can principle”, said the spokeswoman for the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia. Those who suffered the most from the rising costs would have to be relieved quickly. This also applies to the coming year, "because the challenges will be very great in the winter after next."

NRW Climate Protection Minister Mona Neubaur (Greens) told the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" that the two-stage model was a first step. "Now it is important that the federal government quickly creates the framework conditions for rapid relief," she said.
