North Rhine-Westphalia: Koala offspring in Duisburg are given names

Duisburg (dpa / lnw) - The Duisburg Zoo has presented its latest koala offspring and announced the names of the two young animals. The search for suitable names was based on the language of the indigenous people of Australia and the habitat of koalas, the zoo said in a statement. The little male bears the name Yunga, which means something like brother. The female is called erlinga - dry wood. Both animals are now more than a year old. Erlinga was born on November 15th, 2021, Yunga on December 2nd, 2021. "The little ones are becoming more and more independent and are increasingly going their own way," said animal keeper Mario Chindemi. They now drink less milk and ate mostly eucalyptus - the koala's only food.

"The rearing of several young animals is unique in Germany and also a special feature in Europe," emphasized Chindemi. And the next koala offspring in Duisburg is already on the horizon: two more koala babies are currently growing in the pouch of two females. One is around 150 days, the other two weeks old. If rearing continues to go well, visitors can look forward to two more young animals next year. "The koala nursery is growing and thriving," said the koala keeper. With a total of eleven koalas currently living in Duisburg, the largest group of koalas in Europe currently lives.
