North Rhine-Westphalia: Minister: Number of unregistered dogs "near zero"

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The state government assumes that the number of unregistered dogs classified as dangerous in North Rhine-Westphalia is now "nearly zero". This was the result of a query with the municipal umbrella organizations, according to a response from the Ministry of Consumer Protection published on Friday to a request from the AfD parliamentary group.

Dangerous dogs within the meaning of the state dog law have now become rare in public. That is why they are more conspicuous, Minister Silke Gorißen (CDU) reported on the experiences from the municipalities. For holders, the risk of occasion-independent regulatory inspections has increased. Keeping a dangerous dog in public places is difficult and therefore not attractive for owners.

The probability of being discovered with an unauthorized dog is "relatively high in most municipalities". The minister replied that there was no reliable data for the assumption made by the AfD opposition in their query that "several hundred thousand dogs in the state are probably not registered in North Rhine-Westphalia" - with negative consequences for tax revenue and the safety of citizens.
