North Rhine-Westphalia: More places for refugees from Ukraine: Concerned municipalities

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In the North Rhine-Westphalian state accommodation, the number of places for war refugees from Ukraine is to be almost doubled. In a first step, another 3,850 places would be created, the NRW refugee ministry announced on Thursday in Düsseldorf. So far there are 4040 places in these accommodations.

However, as the "Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" (WAZ) reported, many towns and communities in North Rhine-Westphalia consider these expansion plans to be insufficient. The municipalities not only have difficulties in accommodating immigrants, in many cases they also do not succeed in organizing places in schools and day-care centers quickly.

Another challenge is to initially accommodate all unaccompanied minor refugees who come to NRW in Bochum, Mayor Thomas Eiskirch (SPD) told the WAZ. All capacities and even additionally used gyms are exhausted.

Last week, the NRW refugee ministry reported that there was still no nationwide overload in NRW - apart from capacity peaks in individual municipalities. So far, around 215,000 people from the Ukraine have been registered in NRW.
