Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The number of pensioners in North Rhine-Westphalia is increasing. As the state statistics office IT.NRW announced on Monday in Düsseldorf, there were 270,605 so-called pension recipients in the public sector at the beginning of this year, 1.6 percent more than a year earlier. The reason for the increase is demographic change.
The pension recipients are former civil servants who worked in the state, local and social security institutions before they retired. Their widows and widowers as well as former judges and their surviving dependents are also included in the total number of pension recipients. In 2021, pension payments amounted to 10.3 billion euros, which was 2.9 percent more than in 2020.
