North Rhine-Westphalia: Poisoning in Hürth: Infant also died

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - Because of the alleged poisoning of two women and an attempted murder, a man from Hürth will soon have to answer before the district court in Cologne. The 41-year-old is said to have poisoned his wife and grandmother (92) of his new partner with the heavy metal thallium. His 36-year-old partner, who was pregnant at the time, was saved. As court spokesman Jan Orth confirmed on Tuesday on request, the recently born infant has now also died.

The competent chamber of the district court ordered the autopsy of the baby, said Orth. The aim is to clarify whether the death of the child is possibly related to the poisoning of the partner in whose blood thallium had been detected. First, the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" (Wednesday edition) reported.

He is currently charged with two counts of murder and attempted murder in conjunction with attempted termination of pregnancy. The public prosecutor assumes insidiousness and cruelty as characteristics of the murder. According to the indictment, the nurse administered the thallium 2020 and 2021 to the three women. The agent, which was formerly used as rat poison, causes, among other things, tachycardia, cramps, organ damage or bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. The trial against the 41-year-old is scheduled to begin on September 19, according to the court.
