North Rhine-Westphalia: Record find: Customs ensure half a tonne of shisha tobacco

Bonn (dpa / lnw) - Customs and police forces found almost half a ton of untaxed tobacco in a shisha bar during a raid in the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn. The find on Friday evening was "the largest amount of untaxed water pipe tobacco that we have ever had during such controls," as a press spokesman for Cologne's main customs office announced on Saturday. The tobacco, stored in bags and cans, was found in a garage in the backyard of the establishment.

Around 100 emergency services checked a total of four shisha bars in Bad Godesberg at the same time that evening. The officials also secured numerous tobacco tins in the kitchens of the other bars. In addition, according to the spokesman, it was allegedly illegally manufactured tobacco, where "the profit margin is often higher than with drug trafficking". An investigation has been launched against the bar operator.
