North Rhine-Westphalia: Round table to deal with the deportation of children in NRW

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A round table in North Rhine-Westphalia is intended to work through the suffering of millions of "deportation children". This was announced by the SPD state parliamentary group on Sunday in Düsseldorf. She referred to a response from the State Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. Accordingly, the start of the round table, which is intended to contribute to the processing of child deportations in North Rhine-Westphalia, is planned for the beginning of the coming year.

From the post-war period up until the 1990s, many children were sent to children's homes and sanatoriums for spa stays.

"Hundreds of thousands have had some bad experiences in deportation centers. They were subjected to harassment, humiliation, psychological and physical violence and sometimes also sexual assaults," said SPD MP Josef Neumann. The dark chapter was not sufficiently processed. In addition, the system of sending children was not limited to a single federal state. A nationwide investigation could be coordinated in a federal-state working group. Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) is on the move, the SPD politician asked her.

In January, the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Health and Social Affairs presented a study on the processing of the suffering of millions of so-called deportation children with numbers. According to this, in NRW alone, between 1949 and 1990, trips were organized for over 2.1 million spa children to the often notorious spa or convalescent homes. In 1962 alone, almost 100,000 children and young people were sent from North Rhine-Westphalia. The scientists could not find out how many children came to the spa several times during this period.
