North Rhine-Westphalia: Soldier denies allegations of rape in Afghanistan

Kempten/Dormagen (dpa/lnw) - A 36-year-old Bundeswehr soldier from Dormagen denied in a trial that he raped a colleague during a foreign mission in Afghanistan. At the beginning of the hearing before the regional court in Kempten, the accused testified on Tuesday that the sex with the Bundeswehr soldier was consensual. The woman even encouraged him to do so.

The crime is said to have taken place two years ago in Camp Marmal in Mazar-i-Sharif. According to the indictment, the accused military police officer is said to have forced the soldier to perform sexual acts with his weapon at night. According to the public prosecutor's office, the soldiers had previously celebrated a carnival party on November 11, 2020.

The man, who comes from Dormagen in North Rhine-Westphalia, faces several years in prison. Several more days of negotiations are planned in the process, and a verdict could then be announced in mid-November. The Kempten judiciary is responsible throughout Germany for such crimes by Bundeswehr soldiers deployed abroad.
