North Rhine-Westphalia: State parliament advises on deadly police shots in Dortmund

The shooting of a minor refugee by a police officer in Dortmund also has a parliamentary aftermath. The legal committee of the state parliament comes together for a special session because of the operation.

Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - After the deadly police shots at a 16-year-old refugee in Dortmund, the legal committee of the state parliament is holding a special meeting today. This had been requested by the SPD parliamentary group.

Most recently, the public prosecutor's office had expanded the investigation into four other officers in addition to the suspended gunman. The Federal Criminal Police Office should also evaluate an audio recording of the operation.

According to the state of the investigation known to date, a police officer had shot the youth six times with a submachine gun. The 16-year-old died in hospital. The critical question is whether and how the youth approached the officers with a knife.

According to witnesses, the Senegalese was crouching on the ground and pointing the knife at himself when police arrived. He was then sprayed with pepper spray and, as he jumped up and moved towards the police officers, was shot at with long-distance electric shockers, so-called tasers. Then the submachine gun shots rang out. The head of operations is now being investigated for inciting dangerous bodily harm in the office.

Prosecutor Carsten Dombert said that the proportionality of the operation was not observed. "The situation was static. The youngster sat there and did nothing."

The police were called to the inner courtyard of a youth welfare facility in the north of Dortmund on August 8, where the 16-year-old was holding a knife with a 15 to 20 centimeter blade to his stomach. The operation was therefore initially as an intervention in a suicide attempt.
