North Rhine-Westphalia: Strong increase in immigration to NRW due to the Ukraine war

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A large number of refugees from Ukraine at the beginning of the year caused a significant increase in the number of people moving to North Rhine-Westphalia. From January to April, 125,400 immigrants from the country attacked by Russia were recorded in the migration statistics, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday. Ukrainians make up more than half of the 215,800 people who moved to NRW from abroad during this period.

According to the statistical office, the number of people moving from January to April this year was a good three times as high as in the first four months of the previous year (71,500) and more than twice as high as in 2019 (95,300).

Most people from Ukraine came in March (84,000 people) and in April (38,600). In the previous years, only a few thousand Ukrainians had moved to NRW. According to the State Statistical Office, the figures are based on preliminary results of migration statistics. The basis for this are registrations and deregistrations in the municipal registration offices.
