North Rhine-Westphalia: Suspicion of money laundering: 200,000 euros secured in a backpack

Bielefeld (dpa / lnw) - When checking a car with a Latvian license plate, customs officers found and seized almost 200,000 euros in a backpack at a rest area on the A44 near Paderborn. Due to the small denomination of the money and the information provided by the driver, there was an initial suspicion of money laundering, the main customs office in Bielefeld announced on Monday.

The 39-year-old driver stated during the check last Tuesday that he was on his way from Wuppertal to Poland. When asked about the cash he was carrying, he only reported an amount of 2,500 euros. However, when checking the vehicle, the investigators discovered a backpack with a total of 192,900 euros on the back seat. The money was secured pending clarification. However, the driver was able to continue his journey.
