North Rhine-Westphalia: The Zollverein Foundation becomes a roller skating rink

Essen (dpa / lnw) - Due to the energy crisis, the Zollverein Foundation is doing without the traditional ice rink and curling on the UNESCO World Heritage site this Christmas season. Instead, visitors can slide through hall 5 of the former colliery on an indoor roller skating rink.

The area of more than 600 square meters was tested and inaugurated on Friday by Reva Rice, "Mama" actress in the Bochum roller skating musical "Starlight Express" and a group of young skaters. "A roller skating rink in the Ruhr area where young and old can skate together and a roller skating musical that connects generations like no other - it just fits together," said "Starlight" managing director Burkhard Koch.

From this Saturday until January 8, 2023, the railway will be open daily for three weeks from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the exception of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The running times are divided into time windows of one and a half hours (during the day) and two hours (in the evening), so that the guests are spread out over the day.

According to the Zollverein, the screed specially laid in the former central workshop is an ideal surface for roller skates and inline skates. In addition to the running times, special offers such as workshops or roller skate disco to DJ sounds are on the program on the various evenings.

Tickets are only available daily at the cash desk on site, depending on availability, roller skates can also be hired. Tickets for the workshops and disco evenings are also available at the box office or in advance on www.skatejam.net.
