North Rhine-Westphalia: Thousands expected for the "March for Freedom" in Cologne

Only last Saturday thousands of people demonstrated in Cologne against the suppression of the protests in Iran. Demonstrations are to take place again this Saturday - also against the Ukraine war.

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - Several demonstrations in support of the system-critical protests in Iran are taking place in Cologne today. The largest rally entitled "March for Freedom" with 5,000 registered participants is also directed against the Ukraine war. According to the police, the participants want to move from the Heumarkt through the city center. The demo is organized by the German-Ukrainian association Blau-Gelbes Kreuz, among others. Germans, Ukrainians and Iranians should travel together.

Thousands of people demonstrated in Cologne last Saturday. Banners read, among other things, "Justice for Iran", "Free Iran" and "Down with the dictatorship".

The trigger for the mass protests in Iran in September was the death of 22-year-old Iranian Kurd Mahsa Amini. The morality police had arrested the young woman because she is said to have violated the Islamic dress code. Since her death, thousands of people across the country have been protesting against the repressive course of the local government and the Islamic system of rule. The United Nations has expressed "increasing concern" over reports of deaths in protests in Iran.
