North Rhine-Westphalia: woman notices fire inside the tree: long extinguishing operation

Grevenbroich (dpa / lnw) - An attentive walker probably prevented a forest fire in Grevenbroich. On Sunday, the woman noticed a smoldering fire in the roots and inside a hollow tree in a small wooded area and alerted the fire brigade. The woman tried to extinguish the fire with a bucket of water and thus prevented the fire from spreading, the fire brigade said on Monday.

The firefighters first had to lay a water supply about 150 meters long to the burning tree. Because it was burning inside and could not be extinguished so easily, a forester had to be called to fell the tree. Only then was it possible to extinguish the embers in the tree. The entire operation was only over after four and a half hours because of the great effort, it was said.
