Essen (dpa / lnw) - A bomb from the Second World War has been defused in Essen's northern district. The ten hundredweight dud was discovered as part of a suspicion check, a police spokeswoman said late Thursday evening. The defusing went smoothly.

According to the city, around 1,000 people had to leave their homes temporarily. Buildings within a radius of 500 meters had been evacuated. There were also restrictions on public transport.
