One last time "Grey's Anatomy": Ellen Pompeo celebrates her farewell to the series

She starred in the hit series "Grey's Anatomy" for 19 seasons. But now Ellen Pompeo is over. The last episode starring the actress has just aired in the US. But is a comeback really out of the question?

The last regular "Grey's Anatomy" episode with series star Ellen Pompeo has flickered across the screens of the US channel ABC. It has been known since last year that Pompeo will be seen significantly less in the current 19th season of the long-lived hospital series. In the seventh episode of season 19, entitled "I'll Follow the Sun", Pompeo's main character Meredith Gray has now left Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle to move to Boston with her three children. Finally, friends and colleagues threw Meredith a farewell party.

Only in the season 19 finale will Pompeo appear again as a guest star. However, Pompeo has announced that she will occasionally return to her most famous role beyond Season 19. However, ABC has yet to renew the hit production. In addition, longtime showrunner Krista Vernoff announced her departure from "Grey's Anatomy" and the spin-off "Seattle Firefighters" a month ago. It remains to be seen whether viewers and fans will remain loyal to the series even without the main actress Pompeo.

On Instagram, Pompeo thanked her numerous fans. "I am forever grateful (...) for the love and support you all have shown me," the 53-year-old wrote, adding, "I will definitely be coming back for visits." Series creator Shonda Rhimes paid tribute to Pompeo in an Instagram post. "What a journey these 19 seasons have been," she wrote about some pictures and a highlight clip of Pompeo.
