The Russian Justice imposed the first fine for "homosexual propaganda" on a local streaming platform, the RBC portal reported on Friday. The affected platform is "Tricolor Cine y TV", which will have to pay 1.2 million rubles (about 14,000 dollars) for not vetoing content that contains "homosexual propaganda" for minors.
Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor did not specify which movie or series became the reason for imposing the fine. Currently, according to RBC, Roskomnadzor is investigating about twenty digital services for possible demonstration of content prohibited to minors.
The Russian regulation that prohibits the "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations", pedophilia and gender reassignment in the media, the Internet, advertising, literature and cinema, provides for fines of up to 10 million rubles ($165,200). or 160,500 euros) for violating the legislation.
Legislation recently expanded an existing ban on "LGBTQ propaganda" among minors to adults to include pedophilia and calls for sex change among teens.
This law has been strongly criticized by LGBTQ associations and human rights organizations such as Amnesty International (AI), which point out that homophobia will increase with the permission of the Russian state and that it will reach a whole new level.
