Today, Thursday March 30, the Catholic Church honors Saint Zosimus of Syracuse.

He belonged to a family of Sicilian landowners. Since he was a child, his parents put him at the service of Saint Lucia in a monastery that bore the name of the saint.

He passed almost forgotten for decades, but it was then that he became abbot of Santa Lucia by order of the Bishop of Syracuse.

When the see of Syracuse became vacant, Pope Theodore then appointed Zosimus. During his episcopate, the saint was notable for his zeal in teaching the people and for his generosity to the poor.

He was also the 41st pope, but his papacy lasted just over a year (417-418). Even so, the appointment of Patroclus as bishop of Arles and the pardon he granted to Pelagius and Celestius who had been convicted of heresies against the Church was controversial.

The Catholic saints are the group of people recognized by the Church as saints or blessed on a specific date. The Roman Martyrology is the document that names and distributes in the calendar the almost 7,000 saints and blessed recognized by the Church.

The saints and saints are prominent men and women in the various religious traditions for their special relationships with the divinities or for a particular ethical elevation. While the consideration of blessed constitutes the third step on the path to canonization.
